The Dent Homestead, re-imagined for modern luxury...
The Cumberland Inn and Spa, located at 118 & 120 Greene Street, is housed in two, conjoined 19th century structures that were used primarily as private residences until recent years.
118 Greene stands on the former site of the 1786 Dent Homestead. George Dent, surveyor of Cumberland, was father to Col. Frederick Dent, the first ‘non-native’ child to be born in Cumberland. Frederick’s daughter, Julia Dent, married Ulysses S. Grant and was the First Lady from 1869-1876. Frederick Dent died in 1873 in the White House while visiting his daughter.
The current structure 118 Greene Street was built in 1890 and is one of Cumberland’s Historic Districts Finest examples of Queen Ann-style architecture. The Cowden House, 120 Greene Street was built in 1810 and is Greek Revival in architecture style. This grand residence has been home to many of Cumberland’s most distinguished citizens, including Capt. William Griffith, William Pearre, and Joseph Footer.
In early 2011, two local families, the Youngs and the Butts, purchased the property and began extensive renovations of the property to restore its charm.
